He didn't get the memo that he's supposed to have small ears. |
Mr. "I want to be butt high" |
He was a sweetheart yesterday. It took me about five minutes to mount because he kept wanting to move and uh, not gonna swing my leg over bareback if he's going to do that, plus all I had was a lead rope so yeah. After he got the gist, I got on and he was good. He was a bit stubborn with stopping where I wanted and then he wanted to be over where the mounting block was to sniff it and figure out why I just stood on that weird thing, but all in all it was a good little "ride" and it worked for a horsey fix.
Then, as we were almost to church, we get a call from A and of course, mom is on the phone gasping like a horse is dead. I freak out and ask her what's going on, is it Red? Is it Spirit? Is someone dying? Apparently, Spirit sliced his neck open on something. We can't figure out what it was but we're going searching this morning.
The above photo makes it look much smaller but in reality, it was pretty big, bloody and the skin was laying over. He cut into muscle, not deep but he cut it. We called the vet and she said she'd be over. It's freezing cold, late at night and the vet drops everything to come and I love our vet like crazy now.
She said it looked bad but she could stitch it up. He'll always have a little scarring there but that's no big deal to us. She said he has a chance of getting an abscess but it's very slim. She cleaned him out really good. We had to sedate him and by three seconds he was falling asleep. It was hilarious. We thought he was going to lay down, but he managed to stay up. Apparently, Spirit can't do hardcore drugs. ;)
Starting now, there will be somewhat graphic photos of the wound and the vet stitching it up and etc. Nothing's too gory, just to let y'all know. ;)
Spirit will be stalled for a week or more depending on if an abscess does appear, if he pulls the stiches and etc. He gets antibiotic every day for a little while, we're allowed to give him a half of a bute every day if he needs it, but no more than half because of his other medicine. We asked if he'd be okay for the parade and the vet said that he should be fine.
Spirit was a trooper though. Even when we cleaned it and shaved it before he was sedated, he stood and chilled out. As soon as the vet walked in, he started getting nervous and whinnied. Probably one of the smartest horses I've ever met. He remembered her from last time and he didn't like her, apparently. :)) Mom was able to calm him down, though. We all froze to death yesterday.
Will give updates as I have em'.
Glad you got it stitched up right away! I bet it will heal nicely.
ReplyDeleteWe're thinking it may not even scar with how it's coming along, so hopefully!!
DeleteAww sorry he got hurt! Sounds like he should be good to go soon though :)
ReplyDeleteSaid we could ride him this weekend so he should be good to get out of his stall prison in less than a week!
DeleteAww! I am glad you got him all taken care of! He will heal up just fine. I can't wait to see what you develop for the parade!
ReplyDeleteThanks :) We were so happy when the vet came straight out! I have plans and I'm super excited for our little costume. :)
DeleteHope spirit gets better soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks! He's a tough pony!
Deleteaww! poor spirit:-( You should use some vetericyn wound and skin care, you can get it at Orchlands. I used it on my horse when she cut her leg and it made it heal faster.
ReplyDeleteLove Vetericyn. We put it on him when he first got hurt, vet told us to start using it again with the stitches were out. :)
DeleteHope it heals up fast!
