So a friend's mare has a sore on her belly, she said flies keep opening it and irritating it. She said one day it's healed and the next day it's bloody again with the flies on it. It's on the middle of her stomach. Any ideas?
She said she'll try and send pictures tomorrow..She's a first time horse owner and I know how worrisome I get over things like that-then again I'm a worrier, lol-so I thought I'd ask for some opinions.
So, any ideas?? Shoot!
Call the vet and have him/her look. Today.
ReplyDeleteThere's a disease called pigeon fever, caused by flies, that occurs on the belly and chest in horses. It follows the center line of the belly and can also occur in the chest or hocks of the horse. It is VERY contagious and basically causes abcesses inside the skin. Transmitted and started by flies.
We had an outbreak about a year ago. It seems to be caused by hot, dry weather. I have a post on my blog from a year ago when we had the outbreak at our old barn.
That's one thing that I had in mind...thanks so much for the idea! I told her she needs to contact a vet to be sure. I'm going to email her your comment. She *just* got this horse a month ago yesterday and since she's not exactly sure on what she's been around, I'd be more worried about that.
DeleteSwat is always good on fly infested wounds. I would have a vet check it out, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions before the vet's word.
ReplyDeleteDidn't even think of Swat, sad considering how much I use it. :)) I told her that she should at least send some pics to her vet, just to be safe.
DeleteMost likely it is the spot that she can't get to with her legs or tail. All horses have it, and on a former horse I had it was a dry patch. If you don't treat it for flies with a product like Swat, it will bleed.
